June is Pride Month…

All around the world the Gay community takes to the streets to celebrate and to promote our right to self expression and self pride in the face of intolerance. Every city is different and unique; in the mid 1990’s I attended Tokyo Gay Pride… there were more folks in the parade than watching.

CDMX North American Pride

American’s from the United States are often geographically challenged. CDMX or Mexico City, Mexico is the largest city in North America.. and if queerness is distributed equally by population; CDMX has to also be the largest gay community in North America.

Memes Monetization and Data Privacy

Targeting memes with personal data (i.e., Facebook reactions) has been suggested as Cambridge Analytica’s low cost “support strategy” for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.

Brands can use the same or similar tools; in this episode I talk with researcher and personal data entrepreneur Paul Dehaye about data privacy, using memes to “collect” and “share” segments of consumers and the monetization of personal data.

Drag in Distrito Federal, Mexico City

Gender performance is not a uniquely American experience, although it has certainly entered into the mainstream of American popular culture within the past several years. Drag and gender performance are instead global phenomena, which occur across the globe in a variety of different forms. These pictures were taken at the annual LGBTTTI Pride Parade in Distrito Federal, Mexico, known to Americans as Mexico City, on June 26, 2016. These photos show the varied forms which gender performance can take in Mexico, highlighting both the similarities and differences between Mexican and American styles of gender performance. These photos also highlight the varied subjects that are interrogated through gender performance–from gender, to species, to culture, to indigenous versus colonizer narratives, and everything in between.

Austin and Harry’s conversation with Anuj Vaidya was a highlight for the Draggedy project. They explored the themes of not only gender, but also nationality and species, in drag. Anuj discusses his work from his first experience of dragging Bollywood actress Helen to his most recent work, which finds drag as a tool to discuss the radical possibilities of imagination.
